TRIALS, PROOFS OF CONCEPT, AND PRODUCTION NETWORKS WITH BLUE ORBIT PARTNERS
As one of the industry’s first and most widely deployed SDN and NFV orchestration platforms for network operators, Blue Planet has engaged with Blue Orbit partners in a number of publicly announced production network deployments, trials, and PoCs with leading network operators. This includes multiple use cases that demonstrate real-world implementation of NFV and SDN, ranging from multi-vendor Ethernet service automation to deterministic NFV.
COLT, BLUE PLANET, VMWARE, AND VERSA: ORCHESTRATING vCPE SERVICES ON CENTRALIZED VMWARE CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE
In a Colt-sponsored, multi-vendor PoC showcase at the Layer123 NFV World Congress in September 2014, Blue Planet demonstrated multi-domain, lifecycle service orchestration of virtual CPE (vCPE) VNFs across an NFV-ready data center infrastructure and an SDN-enabled Carrier Ethernet WAN. This PoC demonstrated an open and agile architecture that allows network operators to efficiently integrate best-in-class VNFs and rapidly develop and operationalize innovative new NFV-enabled Ethernet business services.
CENTURYLINK AND BLUE PLANET: ORCHESTRATION OF NFV-BASED SERVICES WITH NG-OSS
CenturyLink announced that the company will leverage Cyan’s Blue Planet to orchestrate the delivery of NFV-enhanced services to their enterprise and small and mid-sized business (SMB) customers. Specifically, Blue Planet will be integrated with CenturyLink’s Programmable Services Backbone (PSB), providing the ability to orchestrate VNFs from multiple vendors and bridge multiple technologies to rapidly deploy new services across the company’s footprint.
TELEFÓNICA, BLUE PLANET, BROCADE, INTEL, AND RED HAT: ORCHESTRATING VROUTER VNF WITH DETERMINISTIC PERFORMANCE
Telefonica collaborated with Brocade, Cyan, Intel, and Red Hat to demonstrate an advanced and multi-vendor implementation of the ETSI ISG NFV architecture capable of intelligently orchestrating resources to ensure predictable performance for telco-grade network functions. This was called Enhanced Platform Awareness (EPA). The EPA demo utilized Cyan’s Blue Planet as the intelligent NFV service orchestrator, the Brocade Vyatta 5600 vRouter as the VNF, and Telefónica’s custom VIM, all running on hardware infrastructure utilizing Intel processors. Building upon the Deterministic NFV Collaboration with Telefonica and Red Hat announced in 2014, the demo showcased the deterministic allocation of CPU, memory, I/O, and storage resources in real-time to deliver carrier-grade performance for a particular type of VNF.
CENTURYLINK, BLUE PLANET, FORTINET, RAD, AND CERTES: ORCHESTRATING vCPE SERVICES ON DISTRIBUTED OPENSTACK CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE
This ETSI-approved NFV ISG PoC demonstrated the ability to support the deployment of multi-vendor VNFs at the customer edge. Within the PoC, RAD Distributed NFV (D-NFV) NIDs hosted Fortinet’s vFirewall and Certes’ vEncrypt VNFs, with Blue Planet serving as the central micro/macro orchestrator for the entire ecosystem. Together, they demonstrate how new virtualized services can be turned up quickly to deliver new revenues from compelling and differentiated Ethernet services.
COLT, BLUE PLANET, AND ACCEDIAN: SDN AND AUTOMATED, MULTI-VENDOR SERVICE PROVISIONING
The pan-European operator Colt has deployed Ciena’s packet-optical platforms and Accedian Ethernet NIDs, in combination with Blue Planet, as the basis of the company’s “Modular MSP Architecture”. Within this award-winning network design, Blue Planet serves as a SDN control and management platform for automating the provisioning and activation of Ethernet and VPN services over Colt’s multi-vendor layer 2 Ethernet metro and access networks. Since the production network was deployed, Colt has decreased its average time for turning up new Ethernet and VPN services from 45 days to less than 15, effectively increasing service velocity and time-to-revenue.
